WINERIES AND CARDRONA DISTILLERY
16th January 2019Globally acclaimed for the quality of its Pinot Noir grape, the unique geography, soils and climate of Central Otago region provides a rarely matched opportunity for world-class wine and spirit production.
With Queenstown as a base, a spectacularly scenic drive of less than 60-minutes, follows the Kawerau River’s torrent-cut path through the mountains to nearby Cromwell.
The road passes numerous top-class wineries, many of which supply The Lodge Bar. Adventurous Gunn Guys and Girls may also opt to test their nerves at AJ Hackett Bungee Jump along the way.
Alternatively, head right, up the famous Crown Range Road for a visit to the memorably welcoming Cardrona Distillery to sample fine spirits flavoured by this unique land and the wild plants that grow on it.

PEREGRINE
WINES
Where: 2127 Kawarau Gorge Road, Gibbston, Queenstown
Peregrine is known for its multi-award winning Pinot Noirs, supported by superb Pinot Gris, Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnays. The winery is equally renowned for its peregrine falcon inspired architecture. Internationally acclaimed, its lines invoke the wingspan of the majestic bird’s flight over the famous summer thermals of the region.

GIBBSTON
VALLEY
Where: 1820 State Highway, Queenstown
Regarded as one of the pioneers of Central Otago wines, founder Alan Brady planted his first grapes in the early 1980s. Today, on the back of enduring success as one the region’s most celebrated producers, the Gibbston Valley experience has expanded to include a remarkable cave tour, mountain biking, events, food, summer concerts and of course, the essential wine tasting.

MT DIFFICULTY
Where: 73 Felton Road, Bannockburn, Cromwell
Many would say, the distinctive microclimate of the Bannockburn area is tailor made for great Pinot Noir grapes. Certainly, Mt Difficulty winery has harnessed it. Established in the early 1990s Mt Difficulty is home to some the area’s oldest vines and benefits from the complexity such age often generates in grapes. Mt Difficulty’s Cellar Door welcomes visitors for tasting and retail sales.

FELTON ROAD
Where: 319 Felton Road, Bannockburn, Cromwell
Described as an artisan producer of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Riesling variety wines, Felton Road has rapidly garnished a reputation as one of the country’s foremost wine producers. Felton Road’s focus on the biodynamics method of agriculture is well known. Biodynamics is defined by the wine maker as the next step in organics. Felton Road’s cellar door is open by appointment.

CARDRONA DISTILLERY
Where: 2125 Cardrona Valley Road, Cardrona
Connoisseurs of fine spirits rejoice, the Cardrona Distillery was made for you. Current offerings include The Reid, a single malt vodka, The Source, an award-winning gin and the Rose Rabbit, an orange liqueur. Described as “still sleeping” The Cardrona single malt whisky becomes available in 2026. The Cardrona Distillery welcomes the public for tours supported by its renowned southern hospitality.
