The range draws on a broad set of materials chosen for their performance and longevity. Wool and wool blends are central, Including ZQRX Merino, a certified New Zealand and Australian-sourced fibre preferred for its softness, temperature regulation and traceability. Recycled wool and virgin wool blends also feature across coats and blazers. Leather styles use premium hides selected for their weight and hand feel. Casual jackets work across cotton, cotton twill, linen-cotton blends, and technical polyamide fabrics for water resistance and packability.
Blazers are structured, tailored jackets suited to smart casual occasions, available in regular and sports fit. Coats are longer, heavier outerwear designed for warmth. Casual jackets cover a wide spectrum: bomber-inspired styles, Harrington jackets, shirt-jackets, and quilted vests. Leather jackets are a premium tier of their own, built for longevity. Vests provide core warmth without bulk, sitting well over knitwear or under a coat.
A blazer is structured and tailored, with a defined shoulder and a cut designed to sit cleanly over a shirt or knitwear. The construction is more formal and the fabric, typically wool, wool-cotton, or wool-linen, is chosen to hold its shape. A casual jacket is unstructured: no canvas, no defined shoulder line, and typically cut for ease of movement over silhouette. Casual jackets use a wider range of fabrics including cotton twill and linen blends. The practical distinction is occasion: a blazer works where a smart appearance matters; a casual jacket works everywhere else.
Across the range, our construction details reflect a commitment to quality over the life of the garment. Wool styles are milled by suppliers with long-standing relationships with the Rodd & Gunn, ensuring consistency of weight and finish. Select styles use corozo nut buttons, a natural material that ages well and resists the chipping of plastic alternatives. Linings across the range use recycled polyester and viscose blends, adding a practical sustainability credential without compromising on feel. And the entire range is backed by Rodd & Gunn's 2 year workmanship guarantee.
Warmth varies significantly across the range and is determined primarily by fabric weight and construction. Wool coats and wool-blend blazers provide the most warmth: the fibre traps heat effectively and regulates temperature as conditions change. Leather jackets offer moderate warmth with good wind resistance; their weight and structure block the elements. Casual jackets vary: cotton and linen-blend styles are lightly insulating and better suited to transitional weather. As a general rule, fabric weight and lining are the two clearest indicators of how warm a jacket will be.
The starting point is the shoulder: the seam should sit at the edge of the shoulder, not drop onto the arm or pull toward the neck. From there, the fit differs by style. A blazer should allow enough room through the chest and back to move freely without the front pulling open, with the sleeve finishing at the wrist. A casual jacket can sit with a little more room through the body, particularly if it is designed to layer over knitwear. A coat should have enough room at the chest to accommodate the layers underneath without looking oversized when worn with just a shirt. In all cases, length matters. A jacket should not rise above the hip when the arms are lowered, and a coat should fall at or below the knee for full coverage.
