BEHIND THE SCENES
22nd May 2018Observing Derek Henderson at work is a lesson in calm efficiency; restful an unlikely but apt description. Yet, much like the cratered surrounds of the volcanic location, there’s plenty going on beneath the surface.

FAVOURITE LOCATION FOR
RODD & GUNN
Offered as his favourite location for Rodd & Gunn, Henderson describes White Island as “Mindblowing, frankly.”
“The noise is astonishing! There are two primary vents up by the crater-lake. Honestly, they sound like a 747 warming up,” says Henderson.
“I found it quite frightening at times. We’d be working, and the pitch would change in intensity. Your internal monologue asks, ‘Is it about to explode?”
Derek’s remarks reflect those of the whole crew. The location’s capacity for sudden violence is very apparent, keeping everybody on edge.
And it’s hot, literally everywhere. Hot vents, hot streams, dig into the sand at the beach hundreds of metres from the crater and it’s hot enough to boil an egg.
“As a team, we are directing our Gunn Guy and shooting calmly. Yet as an individual, you’re hyperaware of the environment in a way I’ve rarely experienced,” says Henderson. “It helped stimulate the creativity.”
The variety of scenery on offer surprised Derek, who had been concerned the desolate landscape may be one dimensional.
The colours, textures and geometry are unique. Mineralrich oranges, yellows, greens and violets, all quite acidic, bring divergence to the clean blacks and dark greys of the lava field.
